Your trip readiness bar, labelled as curriculum coverage

The readiness percentage on your trip screen is one number for one trip, and it reports curriculum coverage completed: how much of that trip's phrase set you have worked through. It is not a score, not a streak, and not a prediction that you will be understood at the counter.

What this bar is for

Phrazl shows one readiness percentage per trip, and it is labelled curriculum coverage completed. That label is the whole meaning of the number: it tells you how much of the phrase set built for your destination, departure date and scenarios you have actually been through, and nothing more. We will not tell you that 72 per cent means you will order dinner without flinching, because a progress bar cannot know that.

You need it at two moments. The first is the week you set the trip up, when you want to know whether you are on pace. The second is the night before you fly, when you want to know what is left.

There is no streak, no XP, no gems and no daily target riding on this bar. Miss three days and nothing is taken away from you. The number stays where your reviews left it, and the review schedule quietly reshuffles what comes next.

Reading the bar and moving it

  1. Open the trip you are actually flying to

Readiness is per trip, not per account. The percentage you see belongs to that destination, those scenarios and that departure date, so if you have more than one trip set up, check you are looking at the right one.

  2. Read the label before you read the number

It says curriculum coverage completed. Treat it as how far through the set you are, in the same way you would read a page count, not as a verdict on your pronunciation.

  3. Work a session in one of the three modes

Flashcard, listen and repeat with audio playback, or fill in the blank. Say the phrase out loud, then grade it honestly. A phrase you mumbled and a phrase you nailed should not get the same grade.

  4. Let each grade save before you leave the session

Coverage is drawn from your stored review history per phrase, which is also what the schedule uses to pick your next phrases. If a grade does not reach Phrazl, the bar has nothing to count.

  5. Come back to the trip screen to see where coverage stands

The percentage reflects the reviews that saved. Check it when you want the state of play, then go back to the queue the schedule has already lined up for you.

If the number did not move

Grades are saved over the network as you go. On a patchy connection, say on hotel wifi or a train, a grade can fail to save while the session carries on in front of you, and when you return to the trip screen coverage will read exactly as it did before. If that happens, review those phrases again somewhere with a steady signal and the coverage will catch up.

Two other things worth ruling out. Check you are on the trip you think you are on, since each trip carries its own percentage. And check whether a purchase landed in between, because the pack widens the set the percentage is measured against.

Where to go next

  • To see what the bar is counting, read the article on your phrase set and how it is ordered by trip relevance.
  • To understand why today's queue is the size it is, read how the review schedule compresses towards your departure date.
  • To change destination, date or scenarios, start from the three-step trip setup article.

If coverage still will not move after a clean session, email support@phrazl.com with your destination and departure date and we will look at the trip.

Questions

Does the readiness percentage mean I am ready to speak?

No, and we deliberately do not label it that way. It measures curriculum coverage completed for that trip, which is how much of the phrase set you have been through. Whether a phrase comes out cleanly in a restaurant is between you and the waiter.

Are there streaks, XP or daily goals attached to it?

None. The bar is the only progress indicator, and skipping a day costs you nothing except time against your departure date. Nothing resets and nothing is confiscated.

Why did my percentage drop after I bought the trip pack?

Because coverage is measured against the set you can reach. The Free preview is the first 20 phrases of your trip; the Trip pack opens 200 to 300 phrases for that destination. Same work done, much larger set to cover.

Can I see one combined percentage across all my trips?

No. Readiness is a single trip figure, so each trip you set up carries its own bar against its own phrase set and its own departure date.

I graded a dozen phrases and coverage is unchanged. What happened?

Most often the grades did not save, which can happen on a weak connection while the session continues on screen. Review those phrases again on a steady connection, and if coverage still does not move, email support@phrazl.com.

Does the bar decide what I practise next?

No. The review schedule does that, using your review history per phrase and compressing intervals as your departure date approaches. The bar just reports where coverage stands.
