Getting started with Phrazl

This article takes you from your first sign-in to the moment Phrazl does its job, which is a phrase you say out loud in the language of the place you are going. It covers only what a first session needs: three setup answers, your free 20 phrases, and one round of practice.

What this article is for

You have an account and a trip somewhere ahead of you, and you want the shortest route to phrases you can actually say. This is that route.

Setup is three answers: where you are going, when you leave, and which three situations you expect to be standing in. Everything after that is practice. Read this on the day you start, with your flight dates to hand, and it takes one sitting.

From sign-in to your first phrases out loud

  1. Sign in with your email and password

Sign-in is email and password. Once you are in, trip setup is the next thing the app puts in front of you.

  2. Pick your destination

Setup opens on the destination list: ten destinations, one per language. The phrase set is chosen for the place, so pick where you are landing rather than a language family.

  3. Put in your real departure date

The date is not decoration. The review schedule compresses toward it as a hard deadline, so the intervals between repeats are worked out from how many days you actually have. Check it against your booking before you move on.

  4. Choose up to three scenarios

Restaurant, transport, hotel, emergency, shopping. Pick up to three, and pick the ones you will genuinely be in during the first forty-eight hours. If you choose emergency, the selection screen carries a disclaimer: those phrases are for general communication practice, not a substitute for contacting local emergency services or a qualified interpreter.

  5. Open your free 20 phrases

The free preview gives you the first 20 phrases of your trip, ordered by trip relevance so the useful ones come first, with audio on every preview phrase. No card is needed to get this far.

  6. Pick a mode and say the phrase out loud

Three modes: flashcard, listen and repeat with audio playback, and fill in the blank. The audio is an AI voice rather than a native speaker, and it plays at normal speed or slowed. Say the phrase before you check yourself, out loud, at speaking volume.

  7. Grade what you said, and watch the bar move

Grade each phrase honestly and the scheduler places it back in front of you at a sensible point before departure. The single progress bar then moves: it is labelled curriculum coverage completed, not a prediction of how a conversation will go. No streaks, no XP to keep alive. That is the first session done, and the product is now working on your trip.

If it did not work, and what comes next

You cannot get back in

Sign-in is email and password. Ask for a password reset from the sign-in screen and the email goes to your address through Amazon SES. If you are still locked out, or a purchase did not unlock what it named, email support@phrazl.com and the message lands in the support desk.

You want the rest of the set

The free preview covers one trip set up and its first 20 phrases. Beyond that, the Trip pack is £6.99 once for a single destination with up to three scenarios and 200 to 300 phrases, and the Full bundle is £16.99 once for all ten destinations and all five scenarios, with further trips set up at no extra cost. Buying a second destination after a Trip pack takes £3 off, so the next pack is £3.99. Offline use is not included on either paid plan. Purchases are open to customers in the United Kingdom for now.

Your trip details changed

You can delete a single trip and its review history from that trip's edit screen, then set the trip up again from scratch with the dates and scenarios you want. From your account screen you can delete the whole account, by typing your email to confirm, and download a JSON file of everything held about you.

Questions

Do I have to pay before I can try a session?

No. The free preview covers one trip set up and the first 20 phrases of that trip, with audio on every preview phrase, the departure countdown and the review schedule.

Can I choose more than three scenarios?

A trip is set up with up to three of the five scenarios: restaurant, transport, hotel, emergency and shopping. The Full bundle covers all five scenarios and all ten destinations, and lets you set up new trips with no further purchase.

Is the audio a native speaker?

No. Phrase audio is an AI voice, not a native speaker, and the app says so on the phrase. Play it at normal speed or slowed, and paid trips also carry a written pronunciation guide.

What does the readiness percentage actually measure?

Curriculum coverage completed on that one trip, which is how much of your phrase set you have worked through. It is not a forecast of how a conversation will go, and there are no streaks or XP alongside it.

Can I practise on the plane with no signal?

Offline use is not included on the Trip pack or the Full bundle, so plan your sessions for when you have a connection.

My flight moved. What do I do about the trip I set up?

The cleanest route is to start that trip again on the new dates: delete the trip and its review history from the trip's edit screen, then set it up with the new departure date. The review schedule then compresses to the departure you are actually flying on.

Which languages can I pick from at setup?

Ten, one destination per language, with a pre-curated phrase set for each language and scenario combination, ordered by how relevant it is to a trip.

Where do I go if a purchase did not unlock?

Email support@phrazl.com, or send a support request from your account screen. Those requests are kept so purchase problems can be fixed and refunded where something did not unlock.

Set up the trip you have booked

Pick where you are going and when you leave, choose up to three scenarios, and work through the first twenty phrases before you pay anything.
